Dr Ria Bester is a nuclear medicine specialist based in Bellville, Cape Town. Dedicated to the practice of nuclear medicine and its benefits, Dr Bester and her team are able to provide patients with a wide range of services. These include skeletal scans, infection imaging, thyroid scans, gastric emptying, "milk scans" to evaluate gastro-oesophageal reflux in children, hepato-biliary scans, blood volume studies, renograms and renal scans, as well as lung, cardiac and sentinel node scans in patients with breast carcinoma and melanoma. Tumour imaging (e.g. neuroendocrine scanning) is also available. I-131 as therapy for patients with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is part of the service.
Dr MJ (Ria) Bester completed her Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch in 1984, before working as a medical officer in the paediatrics unit at Tygerberg Hospital for two years. In 1987, she began working in the field of Nuclear Medicine, obtained the B.Sc (Hons) degree in 1988 and a Master's degree of Science (in Nuclear Medicine) in 1993, followed by a Master's degree (M Med) in Nuclear Medicine, which she completed in 1999.
In 2000, Dr Bester started her own private practice at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt. The practice grew from strength to strength, and in 2008, she was able to open a second practice at the Oncology and Neuro-Interventional Centre in Goodwood. The Louis Leipoldt practice consists of a state of the art new GE (General Electric) SPECT/CT 4 slice Discovery Optima 640 and a GE Infinia Hawkeye SPECT/CT gamma cameras. At the N1 City practice there is a GE Infinia Hawkeye SPECT/CT 4 slice gamma cameras.
Dr Bester has dedicated staff, including a team of experienced radiographers: Stephanie Nieuwoudt, Blanche Theron-Scheepers and Lyle Michaels. Her receptionist, Anlé van Heerden (at the Louis Leipoldt practice) is available to welcome patients, help with appointments, and assist with any other administrative queries.
